Das Wanderlust Horses for Courses front cover

Artist: Das Wanderlust
Title: Horses for Courses
Catalogue Nunber: DTC009
Release Date: 18th May 2009
Price: £10.00

Given that their first gig was over four years ago (24th Nov 2004, to be precise), Das Wanderlust's debut album has certainly been a long time coming. Given the numerous line-up changes, false starts, let downs, broken vehicles and an almost terminal lack of cash (the band's only dalliance with a 'proper' label being a fairly disasterous and short-lived fling with Fierce Panda, for whom this album was originally recorded back in 2007) its a minor miracle 'Horses For Courses' even exists, let alone that its finally set to see the light of day.

Even more miraculous is that not only have Das Wanderlust managed to survive - they can now boast of having a stable line-up for over a year, and close to 100 gigs around the UK & Europe - but that they have somehow managed to produce a debut album so breathtaking in its scope, originality, and sheer song-writing brilliance that some critics are already calling it 'the finest debut album we've never heard'.

The music itself is hard to classify other than that it is most definitely pop of some sort, albeit a particularly wonky, everything-including-kitchen-sink sub-variety. Despite what the NME say it is most definitely nothing to do with Riot Grrrl, being closer in spirit to experimental pop artists such as The Fiery Furnaces, Deerhoof, and anyone else with a blatant disregard for conventional song structure and a penchant for making music with whatever they happen have to hand (as well as the standard guitar/drums/keyboard set-up, the album also features bass clarinets, flutes, saxophones, kitchen utensils, birdsong, and so on).

Horses For Courses will be accompanied by a download-only single (two tracks from it have already been supported by the likes of Steve Lamacq, Huw Stephens, Marc Riley, and Stuart Maconie), and supported by a full national & local press/radio campaign as well as a typically shambolic UK tour.

Tracks:

1. Pyramintro
2. Puzzle
3. We're All Doomed
4. Sea Shanty
5. Perception Is A Funny Thing
6. Turn To Grey
7. Sherlock Holmes Is Better Than You
8. Where Nobody Knows Your Name
9. Celebrate Ourselves
10. I Wish I Was A Robot

das wanderlust puzzle sleeve

Artist: Das Wanderlust
Title: Puzzle / Tape Project #1
Catalogue Nunber: DTC008
Release Date: 6th October 2008
Price: £3.00

The new single 'Puzzle' is the first single to be taken from the band's forthcoming debut album and it's a real gem, it also sees the band return to Don't TellClare Records after a brief stint with Fierce Panda off shoot Cool For Cat's.

The band themselves find it hard to classify themselves beyond the deliberately vague self-applied term 'wrong pop' and critics seem similarly unable to agree on the band's sound veering in opinion between structure less avant-garde experimentalism and super-melodic noise pop. Think melodic Sonic Youth meets Euros Childs with a bit of Pavement thrown in and perhaps you're somewhere near.

This is a really great 'Wrong Pop' single, it's great indie music in the original sense and with Rocket and Sainted on board taking care of Television, Radio and Press combined with a huge U.K andEuropean tour and excellent video this single promises big things. The single has already begun to receive national airplay and the group were recently featured in the Guardian as band of the day!

The High Plane Drifters are a guitar and drums two-piece whose versatility in musical taste and style has ensured a genuinely unique sounding debut album. The group profess to play their own bastardised brand of PSYCHEDELIC GARAGE BLUES and their explosive hi-energy shows have earned them a reputation as one of the North East of England’s most exciting live acts.

Having already released two singles this 1st album comes after a number of years keeping company with the likes of The Soledad Brothers, Immortal Lee County Killers and The Black Diamond Heavies.

This is a great LP with lovely Blue Note style artwork and each vinyl copy comes with a CDR version of the LP inserted into the sleeve allowing the customer to have both formats. The LP mixes elements of Robert Johnson and early blues, The Velvet Underground, Can, The Blues Explosion, JAMC , Spacemen 3, The Misunderstood and a whole lot more, it’s a diverse and heady brew of quality rock ‘n‘ roll.

Serious Sam Barrett is a solo acoustic artist drawing on a vast range of traditional idioms to create his own unique sound. His songwriting contains echoes of the great blues masters such as Bukka White and Blind Willie Mctell but also of American folk and country artists such as the Carter Family. Raised in the English folk tradition, Sam also draws heavily on English, Irish and Scottish folk music and arranges his own unique versions of traditional songs taking influence from such luminaries as Ewan Mcoll, Tim Hart and the Watersons.

Sam is known for his direct, uncompromising heartfelt live performances and has pursued a remarkably busy gig schedule since embarking on a solo career in 2005. Sam is as comfortable playing in folk clubs as he is in font of rock and punk audiences and his fan base is composed of music lovers from the folk, blues, country and punk scenes. Sam has developed a strong following across England and beyond, having recently toured Califonia playing in pubs, clubs and cafes across the state. This is a really great E.P featuring both original and traditional compositions all played by the excellent Sam Barrett himself.
