"The High Plane Drifters ‘Hot Property’ EP (Don’t tell Clare). Like having all your birthdays arrive at once, well that’s if you like your toons packed with what sounds like a bastardised concoction of raw as you like early primitive JMC going head to head with the more gritty garage psyche blues ensembles currently causing a fuss on respected and well trusted labels such as Sympathy for the Record Industry and Estrus to name but two. I think we are right in saying that these dudes are a duo based in the North East of England and that this four track debut is by all accounts selling fast based on word of mouth and some incendiary support slots for the likes of the Soledad Brothers and Whirlwind Heat. The High Plane Drifters ransack the whole primitive blues culture, dirty, gritty and without doubt potent, it’s the kind of swamp fest that’d have Tarrantino shitting bricks with its lineage transgressing directly to Gallon Drunk and further beyond to the likes of Link Wray and Muddy Waters. Opening cut ‘Electricity in my home’ is a wired up rabble rousing hot road action number found hauled up in a lay by sniffin’ the blue glue, imagine John Spencer and Co dropped dead centre of the 60’s beat / garage scene – yeah that f**king good. ‘You’ve got to try’ trips into the kaleidoscopic world of classic Spacemen 3, repetitive looping chords and that primal mind-melting core so much in evidence on their early classic outings. Flip over and things get decidedly more fraught and animated, the fucked up wretchedness of the beating a path to oblivion ‘Cry like a River’ has that out of it feel as though Jim Morrison was doing extra curricula work fronting a secret underground student psyche band, listen a little closer and the detachment of early Warsaw / Joy Division begins to eke into view. ‘Road Theme’ is your bog standard hillbilly instrumental executed in the best tradition of those classic Perkins Sun discs. Buy on sight – these kids will break hearts, pressed on red vinyl as if you needed any further prods and without doubt Single of the Missive." by Mark @ LosingToday.com

The High Plane Drifters and Dooley Wilson became friends when they met supporting the Soledad Brothers. This friendship came to musical fruition in September 2005 when a 3 week UK tour was completed together, alongside the recording of this 4 track split EP , which is the second release from the North East based "Don't Tell Clare" records.

This is also the second vinyl release for the drum-guitar-vocal two piece t.h.p.d who continue their own particular brand of stripped down exp / psych / garage / blues."Trouble In Mind" is a re-recording of a early demo aired by the late John Peel, while their second track features Johnny Walker of the Soledad Brothers on guest guitar. Dooley Wilson delivers two stand-out tracks also , he is the man recognised as having penned "Goin Back To Memphis" subsequently covered by The White Stripes amongst others. He was also a core founding member of pre-Soledads outfit Henry and June. Playing slide blues guitar the two tracks on this bumper EP illustrate his diverse talents.

dAS wANDERLUST dtc003 cdr

Artist: Das Wanderlust

Title: Das Wanderlust S/T E.P

Catalogue Number: D.T.C 003CDR

Released: September 2005

Tracks:

1. I Wish I Was A Robot 2.It Will Never Be Yours 3. Sherlock Holmes Is Better Than You4. Apples (Live) 5.Lenor (Live)

Limited Edition of 150 in Handmade Sleeves.

Now, I suspect that Das Wanderlust don’t take themselves too seriously. They make self-styled 100mph Fisher Price pop that would invite lazy comparisons to Bearsuit or the Retro Spankees. This single has already been championed by Phil Jupitus on Radio 6, and I’m not surprised because it is a cracker. Shouty vocals, chaotic guitar, bleepy keyboards. Remember kids, serious art is as serious art does..

The ep closes with a live version of ‘Lenor’, a blistering track with the kind of pay dirt chorus that will have you singing round the house for weeks. 5 tracks, 12½ minutes in total, this is bubblegum pop at nosebleed speeds. Das Wanderlust aren’t pretending to be cool (they have a song called ’Sherlock Holmes is better than you’), but with songs as strong as these, why bother with any pretentious rock posturing. Serious Sam Barrett is a solo acoustic artist drawing on a vast range of traditional idioms to create his own unique sound. His songwriting contains echoes of the great blues masters such as Bukka White and Blind Willie Mctell but also of American folk and country artists such as the Carter Family. Raised in the English folk tradition, Sam also draws heavily on English, Irish and Scottish folk music and arranges his own unique versions of traditional songs taking influence from such luminaries as Ewan Mcoll, Tim Hart and the Watersons. Sam is known for his direct, uncompromising heartfelt live performances and has pursued a remarkably busy gig schedule since embarking on a solo career in 2005. Sam is as comfortable playing in folk clubs as he is in font of rock and punk audiences and his fan base is composed of music lovers from the folk, blues, country and punk scenes. Sam has developed a strong following across England and beyond, having recently toured Califonia playing in pubs, clubs and cafes across the state. This is a really great E.P featuring both original and traditional compositions all played by the excellent Sam Barrett himself.

The High Plane Drifters are a guitar and drums two-piece whose versatility in musical taste and style has ensured a genuinely unique sounding debut album. The group profess to play their own bastardised brand of PSYCHEDELIC GARAGE BLUES and their explosive hi-energy shows have earned them a reputation as one of the North East of England’s most exciting live acts.

Having already released two singles this 1st album comes after a number of years keeping company with the likes of The Soledad Brothers, Immortal Lee County Killers and The Black Diamond Heavies.

This is a great LP with lovely Blue Note style artwork and each vinyl copy comes with a CDR version of the LP inserted into the sleeve allowing the customer to have both formats. The LP mixes elements of Robert Johnson and early blues, The Velvet Underground, Can, The Blues Explosion, JAMC , Spacemen 3, The Misunderstood and a whole lot more, it’s a diverse and heady brew of quality rock ‘n‘ roll.

das wanderlust puzzle sleeve

Artist: Das Wanderlust
Title: Puzzle / Tape Project #1
Catalogue Nunber: DTC008
Release Date: 6th October 2008

Das Wanderlust have so far released two 7' singles. The first single, 'The Orange Shop', was named by BBC 6music's Marc Riley as his no.1 single of 2006 ,and reached no.14 in the annual festive fifty. They have recorded sessions for Huw Stephens at Maida Vale (BBC Radio 1), for Marc Riley in Manchester (BBC6music), and for John Kennedy at XFM.

They have performed at various UK & European festivals including the inaugral Latitude Festivals of 2006, and as the sole representatives of the BBC at Eurosonic Festival (NL) in 2007, which was accompanied by a half-hour live slot on Radio 1. They have toured with Maximo Park, Art Brut, Persil (NL), and many others.

The new single 'Puzzle' is the first single to be taken from the band's forthcoming debut album and it's a real gem, it also sees the band return to Don't TellClare Records after a brief stint with Fierce Panda off shoot Cool For Cat's.

The band themselves find it hard to classify themselves beyond the deliberately vague self-applied term 'wrong pop' and critics seem similarly unable to agree on the band's sound veering in opinion between structure less avant-garde experimentalism and super-melodic noise pop. Think melodic Sonic Youth meets Euros Childs with a bit of Pavement thrown in and perhaps you're somewhere near.

This is a really great 'Wrong Pop' single, it's great indie music in the original sense and with Rocket and Sainted on board taking care of Television, Radio and Press combined with a huge U.K andEuropean tour and excellent video this single promises big things. The single has already begun to receive national airplay and the group were recently featured in the Guardian as band of the day!
